Treatment for Knee Pain in Buckingham
If you are in Buckingham and are suffering from knee pain, Aceso Family Chiropractic may be able to help.
What Causes Knee Pain?
Knee pain can be caused by a number of different reasons. Pain that comes on randomly is often a result of a problem elsewhere. A problem in the lower back, hip or foot can change the way in which a person walks and this can have an affect on the knee. For example, adjusting your posture because of back pain can mean your knee is carrying more weight than it should.
Knee pain can also be caused by arthritis, which is wearing of the cartilage in the knee . In some cases this can get so severe that a knee replacement is necessary. But there are many techniques that can be adopted to help better manage an arthritic knee and put off the need for surgery.
A common cause of knee pain in kids and younger people results from poor tracking of the knee cap over the joint below. This is known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
Another common cause of knee pain is torn cartilage or ligaments, which is often caused by sporting injuries. This is often associated with a clicking joint, a joint that locks or giving way of the knee.
Treating Knee Pain at Home
Many patients with knee pain struggle to do simple tasks such as walking up or down stairs, and so it is important that treatment is started as soon as possible. Often if left compensation can lead to pain in other parts of the body such as lower back pain or hip pain.
There are different ways to help with knee pain at home and these can be beneficial to all.
- When lying down, place a pillow under the knee to avoid full extension and to create space in the joint.
- Use ice packs to reduce swelling.
- Massage the quadriceps muscles.
- Use foam rolling techniques on the leg muscles to regain muscle elasticity.
- Stretch hamstrings.
- Wearing a knee support in some cases can be helpful and in other cases can make things worse.
