The Role of Vitamin D in Inflammation: Why It's Crucial for Your Health

At Aceso Chiropractic, we talk a lot about spinal health, but I’m sure by now you’ve heard me harp on about Vitamin D a time or two—well, here we go again! And for good reason! Vitamin D plays a key role in managing inflammation, supporting immune function, and is crucial for overall well-being. As the UK seasons change, especially as we move into the colder, darker months, maintaining healthy Vitamin D levels becomes even more important.

Why Vitamin D Matters

Vitamin D is more than just a bone-health booster. It actively helps regulate inflammation in the body, which can reduce your risk of developing chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, and even depression. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or infection, but when it becomes chronic, it can cause widespread pain and long-term damage. Vitamin D helps modulate this inflammatory response, making it a crucial nutrient for anyone dealing with chronic pain or inflammatory conditions.

Challenges of Getting Enough Vitamin D in the UK

Now, here’s the tricky part about living in the UK. You can only naturally produce Vitamin D from sunlight between April and September, typically between 11 am and 4 pm. To do this, you’d need to spend at least 20 minutes outside with your face and arms uncovered—and no sunscreen! Remember, SPF blocks the UVB rays that help produce Vitamin D.

For non-Caucasian individuals, those over the age of 65, or anyone carrying extra weight, it’s even harder to get enough Vitamin D from sunlight alone. Higher melanin levels, ageing skin, and body fat all make it difficult to synthesise and use Vitamin D efficiently. That’s why these groups, in particular, should supplement all year round—yes, even in the summer!

The Importance of Supplementing All Year Round

Here’s the kicker: 60% of the UK population is Vitamin D deficient year-round, and by March, a whopping 87% of us are running low. If you're non-Caucasian, elderly, or overweight, it's nearly guaranteed you’ll be deficient without a daily supplement. So, for those of you who hear me talking about Vitamin D all the time, now you know why!

For high-quality Vitamin D supplementation, we recommend InHealth Vitamin D3 with K2. It's one of the best options on the market, and the added K2 helps your body make the most of it. Don’t wait until winter hits to get started—your immune system will thank you!
